Challenges

Rabbits and Robots is a small Etsy business that expanded from selling only knitting patterns to selling knitting kits. The client was planning to sell direct to consumer but also wanted to expand into wholesale. Because the business is small, the primary concerns of the client were making a kit that would look good on store shelves but was also inexpensive to print and ship.

Because of the client’s budgetary constraints, I was asked to design a packaging label that would adhere to a generic box or bag, and to choose the box or bag that would be the most economical and appealing.

Here’s an earlier packaging design. While the product would look good on a shelf and the label is clever, the size of the label was prohibitively expensive and the packaging would also increase shipping prices.

Solution

After researching competitors’ knitting kits, I found that most kits come in either a clear bag or a box with a window so the consumer can see the yarn they are purchasing. This helped me to suggest gusseted food pouches as a packaging solution. These are great because they  can both stand up on a table or be hung from hooks on a gridwall. They are also lightweight and durable, so they can be shipped in an envelope instead of a box, keeping shipping rates low.

Next, I found a label size that would work for the packaging. I ultimately decided on 4”x5” sticker labels. This is a size that can be printed at home in small batches but is also a common size for professionally printed roll labels. As the business grows, the client can easily move from small batch to large scale printing without a label redesign.

Finally, the content of the label itself needed to communicate to consumers what was in the bag, what supplies were still needed, and look visually appealing. Rabbits and Robots already uses bold background colors to differentiate products. I used those bold colors as the base and cut out images of the finished toys to place on the labels.
